FTSE Russell, an LSEG company, partnered with 8 Acre Perspective to conduct its inaugural retail investor study. The focus of this study is the U.S. investor mindset about and approach to index investing. Fielded in November 2022 among 1,000 US retail investors who own stocks, mutual funds or ETFs outside the workplace, the research found:
- Almost half of investors (45%) who have advisors and are aware of index strategies do not recall their advisor speaking to them about index strategy investments; 66% of these investors would like their advisor to raise the topic.
- Despite a turbulent market environment, 38% of those investing in index strategies plan to increase use of index strategies over the coming year, while just 3% plan to decrease.
- Among those using index strategies, 77% are satisfied with their index strategy performance.
- Wealthier investors are more likely to be using index strategies (40% of those with $1M+ investable assets vs. 21% of those with <$250K investable assets).
- More than a third of investors who do not invest in index strategies say a reason is that they don’t know how they work; education is key.
